The District Director of Social Welfare in the Kassena-Nankana West District, Victoria Asuliwuno says persons living with disabilities in the district are using the Disability Fund given them for the intended economic purposes.
The Disability Fund is a deliberate approach by government to empower persons living with disabilities economically to enable to improve on their livelihoods.
From 2 per cent, the Disability Fund has been increased to 3 per cent of the District Assembly Common Fund so as to give substantial amounts to beneficiaries to go into viable economic ventures.
In the past, some beneficiaries of the Disability Fund were reported to have used the money given them for other purposes aside the intended economic ventures, claiming that the amounts given them could not be invested in viable businesses.
In an interview with A1 Radio, Madam Asuliwuno said although it is a factual statement that persons living with disabilities sometimes used their funds wrongly upon receiving, those in her district are different and are on the right course.
Albert Acheawu is a beneficiary of the Fund in the Kassena-Nankana West District and has been counted as one of the beneficiaries making good use of the fund.
“I rear pigs and have children to cater for, so my children will not allow me to use the money on merry-making or marry another wife. Although some of my colleagues in other districts sometimes spend the fund with their love ones, people in this district are seriously using their money. Again, I want to put it on record that, next year, per what I’m seeing on my farm I will become the best pig farmer in this district.” Albert Acheawu said.
